What they don't tell you about MS Sync

They don't tell you much!  There are a couple of pretty lame forums for Sync that don't get much traffic.  Then there's SyncMyRide but you need a VIN number to join that.

Why aren't there any enthusiast reviews of Sync?  Perhaps Ford and Sync aren't "cool" enough to attract the kind of fanatical following that the Prius has among the gadget-conscious.

I've had some limited exposure to Sync in my test drives.  As I learn more about it I'll post about Sync and its good points/bad points.

You are certainly correct about there not being a whole lot of information available about Sync. I have to admit that I am a bit disappointed that the FFH apparently is not shipping with Sync 3.0, but 2.0 instead. I am not sure what that really means since the H/W for Sync on the FFH has the GPS chip. Is 3.0 merely the final integration of the web services for Sync or more then that? Will the upgrade to 3.0 be a major event requiring installation at the dealer or will owners be able to download to a flash drive and install it? It would also be nice to know when it is actually going to be available.

Certainly one of the most exciting features of Sync 3.0 is the turn by turn directions that is in Sync 3.0. I know if you have a navigation system that is no big deal, but it is not the case for those of us without it. One interesting thing that I have read else where about the sync navigation, is that it will keep track of you even when it cannot 'see' a satellite. It is suppose to use gyros and other sensors to keep track. So when going through a tunnel it should alert you to that immediate right hand turn at the end of the tunnel.

Anyway, it looks like lots of fun and games ahead.

I'm guessing the FFH doesn't have the gyros built in to support GPS-less navigation. I've read that the Sync 2.0 upgrade required a dealer visit that could cost up to $100 based on the dealer. Perhaps 3.0 will too.

As far as FFH goes, the gyros are already there. They are for support of the car stabilization system, what ever it is called. The H/W for sync should also already have the GPS, the only question is what is needed for the S/W install when the services become available. Now I suppose, they may only support the center console Navigation system, but that is not what I have read on a number of posts about the navigation that is coming with Sync 3.0.

I frankly cannot see how Ford is going to be able to charge for Sync 3.0 installation as they advertise it as available for all their 2010 cars. To me it is like buying a car where the spare tire is available for some reason, but will be at a latter date. You don't have to pay for the spare when it finally comes in. Again only time will tell.

We'll be modding our SYNC heavily, including adding night vision. Radar and lidar detection will also be included.
